N-Acetylcysteine For Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is the disorder which is characterized by the pulling of hair from the body. This pulling of hair will result in bald patches and loss of hair. Some common places which hair will be pulled out of are the scalp, eye lids, and eye brows and in some rare cases genital area. There are many medications which can be used for treating the disorder. N – acetylcysteine is known to be very effective for treating it.

This is the medicine which comes with the amino acid L – cysteine. Amino acids are the building blocks of all tissues. This medicine has many uses. It is used not only for treating trichotillomania but also other problems like chest pain, lung cancer and head and neck cancer. This medicine can also be used to treat other illnesses like ear infections, epilepsy, chronic fatigue and kidney disease.

This is the medicine which is used not only for treating but also for preventing alcoholic liver damage. It can also be used for reducing toxicity and for treating many types of cancer. This medicine can also be used as a hangover remedy. It can treat kidney damage and even HIV.

N – acetylcysteine should be given to the patients suffering trichotillomania with caution. The dosage should be between 1200 – 2400 mg/d and there should be regular intake followed by the patient for at least 12 weeks. When taking the medicine the patient should regularly visit the doctor weekly for at least 12 weeks.

This medication can be used not only for trichotillomania disorder also for other illnesses like cystic fibrosis and conditions characterized by mucus production. This medication can provide relief from the symptoms of flu, symptoms which are related to hair pulling, and the symptoms of lung disease.

Just like with most medications, there are some side effects that are associated with this drug. These are nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. Some other rare side effects that are associated with its intake are fever, rashes, head ache, drowsiness, liver problems and low blood pressure. This medication should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and by patients who are suffering from asthma. You should avoid using this medication without the approval of a doctor if you are taking other medicines as well.  If any of the side effects that are associated with the medication are noted then immediate consultation with a doctor should be made in order to avoid further problems.
